Childhood
Born and raised in Warren and Sussex County, New Jersey, Devin James Canfield entered the world in June 1993. Named after Evan James Springsteen, son of Bruce Springsteen, music was woven into his story long before he ever picked up an instrument.
From an early age, Devin’s connection to music was undeniable. By two years old, he could recall lyrics from his favorite Bruce Springsteen songs, singing along to classics like “My Hometown” and “Dancing in the Dark” while performing with toy guitars and microphones. What began as childhood imitation quickly revealed a deeper fascination with music and songwriting.
Music surrounded him at home. A hand-painted mural inspired by Pink Floyd’s The Wall covered a basement wall, while concert posters, musician photography, jukeboxes, vinyl records, and family-created artwork filled the space. These influences helped shape the creative imagination that would become central to his artistic identity.
Devin’s father ran a small DJ business, providing a constant soundtrack through an extensive CD collection, while uncles on both sides of his family introduced him to acoustic and electric guitar. Raised in a close-knit Italian Catholic family, he also found inspiration in church music, where hymns, harmonies, and melodies left a lasting impression on his musical sensibilities and emotional connection to music.
Together, these influences—classic rock, singer-songwriters, family traditions, visual art, and faith—formed the foundation of a lifelong relationship with music that would ultimately lead Devin to a career as a producer, songwriter, and artist.
Early Days
Growing up in the 1990s and coming of age in the 2000s, Devin belonged to a generation that experienced life before smartphones, social media, and constant digital connectivity. Music, personal interaction, and hands-on creativity played a central role in his development.
A self-taught musician, Devin became a student not only of guitar but of music itself. He immersed himself in artists and bands spanning the 1950s through the 2000s, developing a broad appreciation for rock, pop, alternative, metal, singer-songwriter traditions, as well as hip-hop and rap.
By age ten, he had begun teaching himself both electric guitar and bass guitar. He also joined his middle school band as a snare drummer, expanding his understanding of rhythm, timing, and performance.
Before entering high school, Devin was already playing with other musicians. One of his earliest full-band experiences involved performing Metallica songs alongside his friend who played bass, his father - a singer and guitarist, and another guitarist, and drummer. The group played together frequently throughout his middle school years.
As a freshman, Devin joined his first original band, Surrender To The Silence, performing on both bass and guitar. The experience provided his first opportunity to write and perform original music. Though short-lived, the band performed live at a concert series at Horseshoe Lake in Roxbury, New Jersey, in 2009 and later recorded a four-song EP in a friend's basement studio in Great Meadows, New Jersey.
